Bernice’s Place

The Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless established Bernice’s Place in 1986 as the number of homeless children who were out of school and sitting in shelters and hotels grew exponentially in our community. Many of these children were floundering in school, and the Coalition developed this unique program to address their needs.
Educational Support When Children Need It Most
Bernice’s Place provides homeless children with the support they need to maintain their studies during their sojourn through a time of crisis. Each child is matched one-to-one with a tutor who assists the child with his/her homework, works on strengthening any academic weaknesses, and mentors the child through troubled times. All tutors are trained in working with these special children. Each child is assessed by educational specialists for weaknesses and strengths and the program coordinator keeps in regular communication with the child’s school regarding the child’s particular needs and progress.
Social Support Through Recreation
Bernice’s Place lets children be children and have fun! Thanks to grants and donations from various foundations, community organizations and individuals, the children in our program have opportunities to go on trips, express themselves through the arts, garden, learn about the environment and just have fun going to the movies and bowling.
In the summer, we run a day camp for the children where they participate in swimming instruction, explore science, play sports, go on trips, and enjoy field trips to museums and parks. Throughout the summer and during the school year the children are provided with opportunities in groups and individually to deal with their feelings about being homeless. They are also taught non-violent conflict resolution and survival skills in an urban world. The goal is to help build the children’s confidence and self-esteem.
